Eco-Friendly Earth Day Activities

Celebrate Earth Day this weekend and all year with these activities! Psst: you'll want to find your Rockin' Green shipping box or another box for the activities.

You may not have given a second thought to those cardboard boxes your orders arrive in, but we have a few activities that could change that!

For kids, cardboard boxes are full of fun possibilities. For instance, create family memories by turning that cardboard box into an amazing puppet theater. Not only will the kids have fun decorating the box, but their creativity will also shine in their mini puppet productions.

Cardboard boxes can also be used as nifty drawer dividers for organizing sock drawers, junk drawers, craft items, and more!

  1. Empty the contents of your drawer
  2. Measure the inside of your drawer (height, width, and depth)
  3. Cut two pieces of cardboard- one "height x depth" and "height x width"
  4. Use scissors to cut halfway through each rectangle of cardboard
  5. Insert one piece into another and voila!
  6. More squares can be made depending on how you would like to design them. Also, you can add cardstock to the pieces for pretty patterns!

Build Your Own Compost Bin

Back in 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, better known as EPA, reported the United States produced over 260 million tons of solid waste. This was a massive 3.5 million ton increase from the previous year, and we haven’t slowed down since. How can you help minimize waste? A DIY compost bin will help put a good chunk of your trash to better use and can be a fun project the whole family can get involved in.

Plant your own garden at home

Now that you’ve got your compost bin at home, use the soil it’s produced to give back to our planet by planting your own garden at home. Take the seeds from fruits and veggies in your home and plant them to source your own produce, helping you save money and keep your food free of unwanted pesticides or chemicals.

Be sure to check out community gardens too! Gardening is wonderful hands-on activity that brings you closer to nature and promotes sustainable agriculture!

Upcycle plastic containers

Upcycling is a wonderful project for reusing your plastics in beneficial ways. For example, juice and milk cartons can double as watering cans for your plants, and peanut butter jars can be reused for snacks on the go and for packing lunch boxes!

Get into character and put on a show with unwanted clothing

The average consumer throws away 70 pounds of clothing every year. That’s a lot of unnecessary waste that contributes to skyrocketing landfills and pollution.

Gather clothes that you don’t wear anymore and challenge kids to get into character. Whether you have a tacky contest or recreate a favorite play or movie, you’re sure to have fun before giving clothes to friends and family or donating them to your local thrift store. Not only are you helping someone who may need them more than you do, you’re lightening your carbon footprint too.

Customer tip: “ Already a fan of the Active Wear detergent - in addition to my own clothes, I wash the laundry for the "lost and found" plus the used goods swap for three different organizations. AW is a lifesaver - gets stink out and is gentle enough for new recipients to wear the clothes and gear with now worries.”
